Some do, some do not, and the accent is rarely the real cause. What actually makes a phone voice hard to follow, and how to test any service in six calls.

Some do and some do not, and the variable is almost never the one buyers have in mind. Clarity on a phone line is set by three things: the audio path the call travels down, how rigidly the person answering is scripted, and whether they know how to say the names of your streets, your services and your staff. Why do some answering service calls sound hard to follow?
Because three separate things stack on top of each other, and only one of them is the voice.
The first is the line. A conventional phone call carries roughly 300 Hz to 3,400 Hz — the narrowband range specified for standard telephony in ITU-T G.711. Speech runs well past that at the top end, and the frequencies that get cut are precisely the ones carrying the difference between s and f, between fifteen and fifty, between Beth and Bess. Wideband audio, ITU-T G.722, carries 50 Hz to 7,000 Hz and those distinctions survive the trip. Most business calls are not on it. The loss applies to everyone equally: your own receptionist, an agent on a call floor anywhere in the world, and a synthetic voice all arrive at the caller's ear through the same 3,400 Hz ceiling.
The second is the room. An open floor with forty agents on headsets puts a low wash of other people's conversations underneath every sentence. Your caller is not consciously hearing it, but their brain is spending effort on separating one voice from thirty, and that effort comes out of the budget they had for understanding words.
The third is the script. A person reading a screen they cannot deviate from produces a particular kind of unclear — the words are all audible and the answer still does not arrive. Callers describe that as "I couldn't understand them" as often as they describe a genuine audio problem, and the two have nothing in common except the complaint.
None of those three is fixed by hiring locally. All three are worth asking about before you sign.
Is it the accent, or is it something else?
Usually something else, and being precise about this changes what you test for.
Accent on its own is a weak predictor of whether a caller follows a sentence. Familiarity is a strong one. A caller who deals with an unfamiliar accent has a brief adjustment period, usually a few seconds, after which comprehension is close to normal — provided the words themselves are ones they expect. What breaks a call is an unexpected word delivered at speed: a street name pronounced as it is spelled, a service name said with the stress on the wrong syllable, a postal code read as a single blur.
That is why the same agent can be perfectly clear on twenty calls and lose the twenty-first. Nothing changed about their accent. The caller said "Etobicoke" and got back something that did not sound like the place they live.
Two honest qualifications. Some callers genuinely do struggle with unfamiliar accents — older callers, callers with any degree of hearing loss, and anyone on a poor mobile connection, where the frequency loss described above is compounded by dropped packets. And a caller who has to ask twice will often just hang up rather than ask a third time, so you never find out it happened. Those are real, they are not imagined, and a business phone line has to work for the people on the other end of it rather than the average of them.
The practical version: judge a service on whether a stranger understands it the first time, on a bad mobile connection, saying a word specific to your area. Not on where the voice is from.
Does an AI receptionist speak more clearly than a person?
More consistently, which is a different and more useful claim.
A synthetic voice does not have a bad afternoon, does not get quieter on the fortieth call of a shift, does not sit in a noisy room, and says your business name the same way every time. Consistency is the whole advantage — the ceiling is roughly a good human agent on a good line, and the floor is much higher.

The second-to-last row is the one that decides most of these purchases. A transcript settles a complaint in thirty seconds, and it is also how a mispronunciation gets found rather than repeating for a year.

Can it understand your callers, not just be understood by them?
That is the harder half of the problem, and it is the one worth testing.
Speaking clearly is a solved problem. Understanding a caller who is standing beside a running engine, speaking English as a third language, and giving you a unit number is not. How do you test whether your callers will understand it?
Six calls, about twenty minutes, and you can do it before you spend anything.
- Call from a bad connection on purpose. Stand where your mobile has two bars, or use a speakerphone in a room with a fan running. Every provider sounds good on a clean line, so the clean line tells you nothing.
- Make it say your street names out loud. Ask for directions, or give an address and have it read back. Etobicoke, Coquitlam, Tsawwassen, Saskatoon, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce — pick the one locals mangle. This is the single most revealing test on the list.
- Make it say your prices and your service names. "Two-fifty" is a genuine ambiguity on a phone line and you want to hear how it resolves it. So is any service name with an unusual spelling.
- Give it a phone number and a postal code and ask for them back. These are the two things every caller has to convey and the two most often heard wrong. You want digits grouped and read back, not a rapid blur.
- Interrupt it, then talk over it. A voice that keeps going while the caller is speaking is unclear in the only sense that matters, no matter how good the diction is.
- Ask it something it cannot possibly know. Your last invoice number is the classic. It should say it does not have that. If it produces a plausible figure instead, clarity is no longer your biggest problem.

What about your local place names and your own words?
They are wrong until somebody fixes them, and fixing them takes minutes.
This is the honest mechanic behind every "it says our street name wrong" complaint. A voice model pronounces an unfamiliar proper noun by rule, and Canadian place names defeat rules constantly. Tsawwassen is not pronounced the way it is spelled. Neither is Etobicoke, and neither are half the streets in Vancouver or the boroughs of Montreal. The same applies to your own vocabulary: a family surname, a product line, an abbreviation your trade uses that means nothing outside it.
The fix is a pronunciation list built during tuning, and adding to it later is a message rather than a project. What matters is that somebody reads the first week of transcripts and listens for it, because the caller who was quietly confused on day three will not be telling you about it. The same discipline applies to any service operating across Canada, where the pronunciation list is different in every province.
When is a person easier to understand than an AI?
Four situations, and we would rather name them here than have you find them in week two.
When the caller is distressed. A person who is frightened, angry or crying is not producing clean sentences, and a human agent reads the emotional state and slows down without being asked. An AI answers a distressed caller competently and then hands off, which is correct, but the first thirty seconds are worse than a good human's.
When the caller has a significant speech difference. A pronounced stutter, a speech difference after a stroke, or dysarthria. Speech recognition is trained on typical speech and degrades on atypical speech, and the person on the other end usually knows already that phone systems struggle with them. If a meaningful share of your callers are in this group, a human answering your line is the better purchase and we will say so.
When the conversation is genuinely open-ended. Complaints and negotiations where the caller has not decided what they want. An agent can follow a conversation with no destination. An AI is much better than it used to be at this and still not as good.
When your callers are mostly over eighty. Familiarity does most of the work in speech comprehension, and a synthetic voice is unfamiliar to a caller who has never spoken to one. That gap narrows every year. It is not zero today.
None of those four is fixed by better tuning, and none of them is a reason not to use an AI receptionist for the other calls. They are reasons to set the transfer rules so those callers reach a person quickly.
